Lagos, Nigeria
Our Story
Two perspectives, one love
“Some people search a lifetime for what we found while sheltering from the rain.”
Joel
It was a Tuesday in July and Lagos had opened the skies. I had one umbrella and a meeting I was already late for. Then I saw her under the awning on Awolowo Road, holding a stack of papers to her chest like they might float away.
I don't remember deciding to walk over. I remember being soaked within seconds, holding the umbrella entirely over her, and not minding at all. We talked until the rain stopped, then kept talking because neither of us wanted to be the one to leave.
I missed the meeting. I have never been more grateful to miss anything in my life.

I had just printed forty pages for a presentation and the rain came down like it had a personal grudge against me. I was calculating how much it would cost to reprint everything when a man appeared, completely drenched, holding an umbrella over my head and absolutely none of it over himself.
I thought, this person is either very kind or slightly ridiculous. Three years later I can confirm: he is both, and I would not change a single thing.
I kept the umbrella, by the way. He never asked for it back.
